SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

The standard signaling protocol for initiating, maintaining, and terminating voice calls over IP networks.

SIP is the backbone protocol of modern telephony. It handles the setup and teardown of voice calls over the internet, including negotiating audio codecs and managing call transfers.

For AI voice agents, SIP connectivity enables the agent to place and receive actual phone calls by connecting to SIP trunking providers that bridge the internet-based system to the public telephone network.

Understanding SIP is not necessary for using Stellar, as the platform handles all telephony infrastructure. However, for businesses with existing PBX systems, SIP compatibility ensures smooth integration.
