DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency)
The signal tones generated when pressing keys on a phone keypad, used for menu navigation in IVR systems.
DTMF tones are the audible signals produced when you press a number on your phone's keypad. Each key generates a unique combination of two frequencies that telephone switching equipment can decode.
In legacy IVR systems, DTMF is the primary input method. While functional, this approach forces callers into rigid menu trees and creates frustrating experiences.
AI voice agents largely eliminate the need for DTMF input by understanding natural speech. However, some AI systems still support DTMF as a fallback for situations where speech recognition may struggle, such as noisy environments or when collecting numeric input like phone numbers.
